Here is a list of internationally-based sports unions, all of which acts as a non-governmental governing body for a given sport and administers the sport on a global level, usually by drafting rules in the sport, and promoting it to fans and prospective spectators or developing future players and organizing world or continental championships. Some international sports federations like FINA, the International Swimming Federation and the International Skating Union, may manage multiple sports that are referred to in common parlance as separate sports. FINA is an example, which governs swimming, diving, synchronised swimming and water polo. These are separate "disciplines" within the single "sport" of Aquatics.
International sports federations constitute an integral component of both the Olympic and Paralympic movements. Each Olympic sport has been represented by an international sports federation, which in turn helps administer the competitions in the sports during Games. To become an Olympic sport the international sports federation must be recognized as such by the International Olympic Committee.
In the same way, an international sport federation must be endorsed by the International Paralympic Committee to allow their sport to be classified as paralympic. However, in the latter case, several Paralympic Sports are overseen by a specialized Committee of the International Paralympic Committee which is under the World Para branding, for example , track and field. for athletes who are handicapped is controlled by the IPC in its own designation "World Para Athletics". Other Paralympic sports are controlled by the structure of the equivalent for able-bodied athletes such as the UCI oversees both able-bodied as well as paralympic cycling.
