When shooters take the rifle and aim it and aim, all important is their target. The rest of the world fades away. When the thought of winning a lot of money in their heads, their instincts will be the trigger. The question of whether their time of waking upearly, putting in additional hours of training and giving up your favorite food are worth it right now. It is to this moment that 19-year-old Ayushi Podder works hard!
Each time Ayushi is shooting, her aim is much more than the "Bullseye" shot. She is aiming at an Podium Finish! Each time she presses her trigger, she shoots the bullet to her goal of the Olympic medal that hangs around her neck , with the tricolored flag fluttering over her.
Aayushi is a junior rifle shooter , and the newest young sensation in shooting from India to gain prominence in the field, following Manu Bhaker and Gayathri Nthyanadam, Mehuli Ghosh and others. Born on the 23rd of October, 2000. Aayushi is from Sheoraphuli, Hooghly of West Bengal.
Aayushi's love and passion for shooting stem through her father Pankaj Podder, who himself was an ex- Indian shooter and International Shooting Sport Federation ( ISSF) licensed and qualified coach.
Schooling Days And Sacrificed Dreams
Aayushi was completely dedicated to her studying during her time during her time at Techno Indian Public School. It was surprising that even though she was exposed to shooting from a young age, she showed almost zero desire to shoot.
As a child, Aayushi was seven years old, she completed a portfolio with the hope of becoming an actress or model. Aayushi also attended dance classes at a Classical Odisha style and participated in various school-related events.
At the time of her life, Pankaj used to travel across the country to compete in matches. Aayushi did not think that she would one day follow in his steps. A very good academic performer, Aayushi wished to study MBBS when she was a teenager.
Start of Shooting Career
Things turned a bit shortly after her father urged her to give shooting a go. Pankaj spoke about his goal of watching his daughter follow in his steps. "When the daughter I had was only five and a half, I had the idea I could make her the next shooter Olympic champion," he says.
She began training to help her father. In just seven days of being able to hold her air rifle Ayushi became a national champion!
"It is my very first time competing but I already was a winner!" she says, the excitement is evident in her voice. Her first big win spurred Junior Podder to take up shooting.
And with her father's steady support that was a guarantee, she could not look back. As the years passed, Aayushi immersed herself into shooting and discovered with a new passion that she wanted to shed blood for. As she demonstrated her determination and enthusiasm in shooting her school's principal and teachers began to show their support when she embarked on her new adventure.
To excel in the shooting discipline an athlete requires concentration to the max. For Ayushi the concentration and focus were achieved easily. This is the reason she could get excellent scores. "I'm proficient in academics. Concentration and focus are crucial and these two abilities assisted me shooting significantly."
Ayushi is also awed by the importance of perfection in both her sport and everyday life. When she was in the beginning of her working out, the father of her told her "Ayushi is the only one who can take a perfect sight image". These words have greatly helped her in her international career. They've been embedded in her brain. "Perfection is essential," she tells.
After winning the state championship, Ayushi won the pre-national championship for juniors in the youth category the month following. Within one time, Aayushi has secured her place at the Indian team camp. Soon after, she was selected for the Asian air gun team, and within a year, she won her first gold medal in international competition at the ISSF Junior World Cup 2016, Suhl, Germany.
Indian athletes face challenges Indian athletes
The life of an athlete India is not as easy as it sounds. It's true that Ayushi is no exception. She has a lot of unremarkable stories to share from her trips to various locations to compete in tournaments. One of them happened on she returned from Asian Junior Championship in Doha, Qatar.
Ayushi as well as her teammates been able to land at 5 AM on the outskirts of New Delhi from a long and exhausting journey. At this point when she finds out that she is scheduled for an 11:00 AM slot to participate in the 50m Rifle 3 Positions competition at the All India Inter-University Championship. In the midst of sleep and hunger the young shooter competed in the competition and was able to take home bronze.
When she spoke of the event, Ayushi opened up about the incident without regret. She doesn't blame her lack of food or sleep for her failure. She also does not blame ineffective planning of the organizers.
The moment is now, Aayushi laughs it off. This is another item on a lengthy list of organizational and structural issues that athletes have faced and continue to be facing within the sport's ecosystem in India.
In the World Championship in Changwon, Korea, Ayushi had to endure a gap of eight days from the time she arrived until match day. She was not able to train for the entire eight days because of the scheduling of other games. Furthermore, Ayushi's gun was older. It was a terrible experience in the contest.
And to make matters even more difficult Ayushi's father as well as her personal coach was not able to join her on a trip due to financial problems. This is a common issue that athletes face in India in the present. They are faced with financial pressures to purchase equipment, travel for training, to eat nutritious food and many more.
The balance between education and shooting
While juggling academics, shooting classes and traveling to attend events, Aayushi's grades in school didn't drop. After graduating from high school she decided to pursue the field of Humanities and was able to take time to concentrate on her studying and shooting.
At present, Ayushi Podder is pursuing an undergraduate degree in Public Administration at Punjab University at the same as training and participating in competitions. But, Ayushi believes that it could not have been achieved without the help of her school and the management.
Ayushi has no attendance bar because of her inclusion in the Sports Quota. She can practice all the time and is only required to sit for examinations. In some cases, when competitions or selections conflict with her tests The college schedules specific dates for her to sit the test.
A moment in the daily life Ayushi Podder
Like her father, Ayushi travels a lot. Through all of the time, Ayushi takes part in at least ten national competitions. In addition, there are trials for selection, and up or three competitions internationally each year. Apart from her travels to various competitions, she often goes to Delhi to practice in Dr Karni Shooting range. Dr Karni Shooting range, because it's the only shooting range in which she is able to train in the 50m categories.
Ayushi is also required to travel to Chandigarh to go to university frequently. Between competitions, training and college, she's not capable of staying at her home.
A typical day for the teenager from West Bengal begins at 5.30 morning. She gets up, wakes up, and enjoys a gentle warming-up. At 7.30 am, Aayushi is on the breakfast table. After breakfast, she departs for her training.
